Joseph E. Pizzorno, Jr., N.D., appointed in December 2000 to the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy, is one of the world's leading authorities on science-based natural medicine. A pioneer in the field of natural medicine, Dr. Pizzorno is a practical visionary who has dedicated his life to improving the health of the human community. A licensed naturopathic physician in Washington State since 1975, Dr. Pizzorno is co-founder and founding president of Bastyr University, the first fully accredited, multidisciplinary university of natural medicine in the United States. In 1996, he was appointed to the Seattle/King County Board of Health, the first natural medicine practitioner in the country to receive such an appointment. In June 2000, Dr. Pizzorno retired after 22 years from the presidency of Bastyr University, but remains affiliated with the university as President Emeritus and serves as the Senior Advisor to the President. Shortly after his retirement,the Cancer Treatment Centers of America recognized him as "Humanitarian of The Year" in September 2000. In March 2001, Natural Health Magazine recognized him as one of the leading health educators of the past 30 years.
