Why some healthy foods are not included on the list of World's Healthiest Foods.

According to David Huber, director of the University of California, Los Angeles Center for Human Nutrition, humans evolved to depend on a rich diet of 800 plant foods. However, today most people eat only three, and those are often French fries, ketchup and iceberg lettuce! That is why we wanted to create a list of over 100 health-promoting foods that would serve as the foundation for a Healthier Way of Eating.

These foods had to fulfill three criteria:

  1. They had to be one of the richest in nutrients in their food group and has played an important role in the diets of cultures throughout the world. Some were related to the health-promoting potential of the food - for example, its nutrient density and research-based health benefits.
  2. Other criteria were related to how readily available these foods were to the general public in North America - they had to be accessible in food markets and not cost prohibitive.
  3. They had to be familiar foods.

Of course there are many nutritious foods that we could not include but still are healthy additions to your Healthier Way of Eating.
